Time Management for Online Sellers

We all procrastinate sometimes. It’s easy to do when you’re working from home, and especially when you’re in the boss role and the only one responsible for your time is you. These tips will help you figure out where all your time is going and help you manage it more effectively so you can get more done during the day.

Sourcing and Shipping

How much time do you spend in your day-to-day business sourcing items and shipping them out? For online sellers, printing packing slips and going to the post office are some of the most time-consuming tasks. There are a few ways to combat these time munchers, though:

  • Create a schedule. You should only be packing orders a certain part of the day and, if possible, only certain days during the week so the remainder of your time can be devoted to growing your business.
  • Pay for pickups. There’s a good chance you could save a substantial amount of time (and time = money) running to the post office if you simply schedule to have packages picked up. Simply print your labels at home and set your packages in your new “out-going” mat by the door!

How much time a day do you spend interacting with your customers in person, on the phone, or through email? Are you handling complaints yourself? Could your time be better spent doing something else? Do you even have experience in customer service? Obviously, it’s great to be hands-on in your business, but there are certain things that you simply have to outsource if you ever want to get productive. If you’re getting things done now in between all your other duties, imagine how much you could accomplish if those other duties weren’t crowding your schedule.

It can be hard to hand off duties and tasks to another person, but hiring someone, even part-time, can take a huge weight off your shoulders. Whether they’re working for you remotely or on-site, you will be able to get a lot more done in your business and personal life if you have someone else handling all the menial tasks that are eating away at your time each day.

Obviously building a brand is essential to your business growth and success, but you might be over-doing it when it comes to spending time on your social channels. If you’re the one creating all the content, consider outsourcing some of it as well. If you’re taking hours each week to write blog posts and take photos for Instagram, your time could be better spent overseeing those things while other people do them.

By no means become a hands-off worker, but delegate tasks and spend your time more wisely. Engaging with your customers on social media is a huge part of building brand awareness and trust, but you shouldn’t devote a large portion of your day to it.   • E-mail can be one of the biggest time-eaters 
  • Strategy #1 – Block time for reading and responding to e-mails 
  • We are all tempted to immediately stop what we are doing and read an e-mail when we see those pop-up notifications 
  • This breaks your focus, causing you to not only lose the time in reading and/or responding to the e-mail, but the time spent trying to recollect your thoughts 
  • Choose strategic times during the day to check your email, such as starting of work, right after lunch, and late afternoon
  • Strategy #2 – Create Outlook Folders to organize your e-mail 
  • Suggested Folders 
  • Inbox – Keep high-priority e-mails here that you need to act on, and once you have acted on it, move it out of your Inbox 
  • Saved – A general storage folder in which to move all of the e-mails you have already acted on
  • Awaiting Response – This folder will keep the e-mails you send for which you need to track to ensure you receive a response (from your Sent folder), or e-mails from others that you replied to, but for which you are now awaiting a response 
  • Follow-Up – For those e-mails, you want to revisit later but don’t have time right now
  • Strategy #3 – Utilize Outlook Organizational Features 
  • Quick Steps – Some are pre-populated, but you can create custom ones 
  • Rules – If this, then that type of features that can keep clutter down (automatic replies, calendar invitation responses, etc.) 
  • Categorize – Lets you assign color codes to help sort out your email (you create the categories) 
  • Follow-Up (Flag) – This lets you flag an e-mail and assign a start and due date for a response (like Task) 
  • Filter E-Mail – This feature gives you options to filter e-mails to quickly find what you are looking for 
  • Search – You can choose a keyword, too, from, folder – all sorts of options to help you find what you are looking for
